Brenda O'Farrell: When Christmas comes to a small town

Thirty-nine years. That’s how long the annual Firemen’s Auction has been held in Hudson. And the latest instalment Monday evening showed the kind of community spirit it continues to generate, as about $14,000 was raised to put Christmas baskets together for 40 to 50 families in need in the Hudson, St-Lazare and Vaudreuil areas.

But the secret to its staying power is not found in the dollar values racked up over the years. In fact, the organizers cannot tell you how much has been raised in total over the last four decades. The real secret to its success is how it all comes together. It’s the kind of magic only found in a small town. And Hudson, despite all the headlines it generates on the political front, is still a little town with a big heart.

Let me explain:

First let’s look at the name: The Firemen’s Auction. Well, yes Hudson firefighters were there, as they are every year, serving wine and being auctioned off. But they are not, in fact, the organizers of the event. The organizers are the real-estate agents who work for Royal LePage Village in Hudson. They are the ones who solicit and assemble the long list of items that are auctioned off – everything from a three-hour, three-person small plane ride over the region courtesy of Laurentide Aviation in Les Cèdres, to brunch at Château Vaudreuil, to a plate of cookies baked on Monday afternoon by one of the realtors. More on that later.

The firefighters do play a key role, though. They put the baskets together. And deliver them just before Christmas. And they offer themselves to be auctioned off, which always gets the crowd hooting and hollering. This year, three teams of four firefighters went up on the block. They offer to go to the home of the winning bidders to perform four hours of work, or, as they explained, do “whatever is legal.” It’s a pretty good deal, as the auctioneer sold them off for $450, $475 and $650. One firefighter on the first team encouraged the crowd by taking off his shirt, while a member of the last team drove the bidding up by bragging about his carpentry skills.

But neither the real-estate agents nor the firefighters are a charity, so Le Pont Bridging, the food bank in Hudson, takes care of the charitable oversight. It also supplies the names of the families who will receive the Christmas baskets.

And then there are the bidders, a group of people who all appear to know each other. Welcome to Hudson.

But what strikes you is how little incredible things happen with such ease, without rehearsal. Sure the big prizes, like Canadiens hockey tickets three rows up from the Habs bench, go for good prices. But how do you explain how the owner of Lee Pizzeria on Main Road sends over two pizzas in the middle of the auction. The lineup of prizes gets put on hold and the all-dressed pies are put on the block. You wouldn’t want them to get cold, right? The first one goes for $80! Eighty bucks! It is quickly delivered to the bidder’s seat in the audience. Brigitte Beaudry, one of the Royal LePage agents, is the buyer. What does she do? She opens the box and offers all those sitting around her a piece.

Then there is that plate of cookies I mentioned earlier. The auctioneer started the bidding by describing them simply as Margaret’s shortbread. By the time you heard “Sold!” The cellophane-wrapped plate of cookies made by realtor Margaret Lagimodière was scooped up for an incredible $160. Only in a small town would you know just how good her shortbread really is. Lagimodière also makes a mean plum pudding, it seems. It went for $50. Only in a small town.
